Founded by John W. Towle and Fred K. Smith in 1906, Omaha Steel Works began operations at 46th and Farnam Streets as a steel fabricator producing parts for urban infrastructure and bridges.
Throughout the years, Omaha Steel Works used this industrial structure to produce and fabricate proprietary castings. In 1922, the Nebraska State Government awarded the company the steel contract to construct the State Capitol building in Lincoln, Nebraska. In the 1930s, steel castings for steam locomotives and other parts were produced to serve the railroad industry.
Today, utilizing the existing structures as the bases of the design, Catalyst embraces the narrative and impact of the building’s history while supporting the innovative spirit that drives the building’s future occupants—overlaying modern, flexible office space that provides an adaptable working environment, with shared spaces that allow the structure of the past to be on display. All of which celebrates themes and the synergy of art, science, and innovation found in the history of steel and the healthcare industry.
